The Tiger Letter: Winter 2007
Bruce Siegal, senior vice president and general counsel at The Collegiate Licensing Company
recently wrote a column for the ICLA corner in the Athletics Administration magazine. Thanks to
Bruce for allowing us to reproduce portions of that article. "As collegiate trademark
licensing programs continue to expand and generate significant revenue streams, collegiate institutions
have become increasingly aware of the value of their respective names, logos, mascots, seals,
colors, uniform designs and other indicia.
Taking steps to enhance the value of these important trademark assets through comprehensive
registration should be a priority."
The University of Missouri has taken appropriate steps as mentioned above to enhance the
University’s trademark portfolio. Please see the table on back for newly federal registered
marks and their appropriate use.
"A strong portfolio is an invaluable weapon in combating infringement and provides many benefits."
"The entire right side of Meow is filled with Mizzou products."

Meow owner Beth Abernathie has loved cats her entire life. “I’d been to about every cat store in
the country before I knew I’d have my own.” Meow Boutique originally opened in 1998 on Broadway above
Village Wine and Cheese. That location offered only 400 square feet worth of feline gifts.
At its present location on Chapel Hill Road, Meow Boutique has over 2,000 square feet of unique cat
products. Meow began offering officially licensed Mizzou items five years ago. Beth says she figured
that Truman the Tiger is a cat, so her store should carry black and gold products. “I’m very happy
that we’re not the Mizzou Bears,”she adds.
Beth says Meow’s selection of Mizzou products expands every week. “I can’t stand not having something.
I’m constantly on websites looking [at new products].”
Step inside the store, take one look to your right, and it isn’t difficult to see that this
is true. Meow is offering the entire line of Mizzou Plaid products. Just inside the door
of the store is a display of all the plaid products. Beth says that Meow’s customers have
reacted favorably to the plaid, “I think people get tired of the same logo stuff. [The
Mizzou Plaid] is cool. It’s classy.” Meow will soon have a website where customers can shop for their
favorite cat gifts. Fifty to sixty percent of Meow’s in-store merchandise will be available
online. Visit their website www.meowboutique.com and check it out.
