An eight-foot Truman the Tiger greets Mizzou fans as the sounds of Marching Mizzou mix with impromptu "M-I-Z, Z-O-U" cheers.

This isn’t a pre-game tailgate; it’s the Missouri Shirt Company on football Saturdays.

"Going to Missouri Shirt Company on a football Saturday is like going to a college reunion party," says owner Don Henderson.

As alumni, students and their families fill the store on game days, you can usually find Don and Hope Henderson behind the counter or mingling with customers. The Henderson’s have been operating their store in downtown Columbia for 27 years.

A graduate of MU’s business school and MBA program, Don started the business in 1976 with a t-shirt store on Broadway.

Over time, the store shifted to solely Mizzou merchandise and changed its location to 15 S. Ninth Street, where it has been for 15 years.

Missouri Shirt Company offers so much more than just shirts. MU fans have a wide selection of traditional apparel as well as a variety of ties, clocks, picture frames, jewelry and even golf bags.

The Missouri Shirt Company also has a 16-page mail order catalog featuring a collectible cover each edition. Their website, www.EverythingMizzou.com, features same-day shipping and up-to-date selection of merchandise.

Another unique feature of the Missouri Shirt Company is the Hendersons’ insistance on only using the correct “Mizzou gold” dye from all suppliers. As a result, many styles must be custom dyed to meet demands.

What tips do the Hendersons suggest for success and longevity? "No matter how busy you are working behind the scenes," Don says, “Remember to make a trip to your store the most fun you can for Tiger fans."

The Coalition to Advance the Protection of Sports Logos (CAPS) now has a new program to prevent counterfeit products and trademark infringement. Their new website, www.capsinfo.com, provides information about the services CAPS offers as well as how to identify unlicensed products. It also includes a link to all CLC member institutions.

In addition to retailers, CAPS also works to educate law enforcement officials andcustoms agents on how to identify unlicensed products.

How to Identify Licensed Merchandise:

  • "Officially Licensed Colliegiate Product" label or hangtag is shown somewhere on the product.
  • The name of the licensed manufacturer is displayed somewhere on the product or its labeling.
  • All merchandise has appropriate trademark next to a specific mark.

One of the nation’s most heated rivalries is about to become a little hotter.

Border War

Historic rivals since the late 1800’s, the Missouri Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks recently unveiled the Border War Series. Thanks to a generous sponsorship of the Midwest Ford Dealers, the series will feature a scoring system that awards points to each school based on the results of head-to-head competition in 17 different sports. The school that has accumulated the most points at the end of the year will be awarded the Traveling Border War Cup at the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission Banquet each June.

“Few rivalries in all of college athletics can match the spirit and intensity of Mizzou,” said MU Athletic Director Mike Alden. “We are very pleased that the Midwest Ford Dealers have joined us in this venture, and we believe that their sponsorship will enable us to further enhance the exposure of our athletic programs through the series.”

For more information on retailing opportunities in conjunction with the new Border War logo, contact Carrie Emert, with the Collegiate Licensing Company.
