The Department of Athletics recently unleashed an initiative for the upcoming school year pushing the
color gold for every Mizzou home game. Spanning all MU sports, the program's goal is to have every student wearing gold for a more TV-friendly look.
According to Associate Director of Athletics for Administration Mark Alnutt, the Tigers resounding
victory over Nebraska last year had a great deal to do with desire for a gold look. "The Nebraska game showed how great the stadium looked and showed on national television," Alnutt said.
Other Big 12 schools such as Texas and Kansas State sport one color at home games which Alnutt saw as
appealing after traveling to their institutions.
Retailers such as the Tiger Spirit began preparing for the gold rush back in December, booking more gold apparel than usual. "Our orders for this fall are larger due to the success of the football program and because of the push for gold," Owner Michelle Dillard says.
A possible concern is whether or not students will have gold outerwear when the cold weather arrives. Tiger Spirit is trying to prepare for such situations. According to Dillard, Tiger Spirit has already ordered a gold windshirt, gold Columbia fleece, gold gloves and hats.
If successful, Alnutt sees the plan growing in popularity over the years.
"As this initiative grows and the demand for gold increases, I'm sure our vendors will be begin to have
an adequate supply to meet our fans' needs," Alnutt said.

El Sol owner Julie Holliday has a passion for Mexican culture. "I fell in love with the country and the language," she says of a trip she took to Mexico as a Mizzou student. She also has a passion for her alma mater. A recent creation, the "Mizzou Bell" combines her love for Mizzou with a Mexican touch.
A 1993 graduate of Mizzou, Julie started her business, El Sol Jewelry, in the fall of 1997 which allowed her to travel back to the country where she gained lasting memories and purchase hand-crafted sterling silver jewelry to import and sell in Columbia.
A happily married mother of two boys, Julie decided it was unrealistic to travel back to Mexico so often, so she began carrying her own line of silver bells, hand-crafted by an artisan in Austin, Texas. "When I found out they had a custom bell program, I jumped at the chance to produce an exclusive bell for Mizzou. [The bell] is an ideal keepsake for those who have a special place for Mizzou in their hearts."
Julie introduced her newest memento, the Mizzou Bell, in the summer of 2007. Hand-crafted using the finest sterling silver and gold alloys, the bell is meant to evoke nostalgic feelings. Its shape reflects the Jesse Hall Dome, and bears a classic Tiger logo with the look of everything needed to bring a piece of
Mizzou to your home.
According to Julie, making the bells is a refined process. "Each bell is truly unique - the artisans craft each bell by hand, one-at-a-time, ensuring no detail is overlooked."

Wear Gold Be Responsible Arrive Early; Stay Late Celebrate Our Traditions Respect Our Game
Hi! My name is Rob Garwitz, and I am the new intern in the MU Licensing and Trademark office. I am an undergraduate studying advertising in the School of Journalism and will graduate in May of 2009.
I'm originally from St. Louis, Missouri and consider myself a die-hard Mizzou fan! As the son of two Mizzou alums, I grew up in a black and gold environment. My family made multiple trips over the years to
watch football and basketball games, fond memories I will never forget. I'm in my last year at Mizzou and
still tailgate with my family before football games.
Needless to say, I am a proud Tiger and am thrilled to be working for the University. I love MU's spirited atmosphere and see myself coming back to games for years to come.
My main duty will be to write and design the Tiger Letter. Though I'll be here only for the summer,
I'm looking forward to keeping Mizzou-RAH retailers up-to-date with the latest fashions. Go Tigers!
