Spotlight:
Mizzou Plaid

The 2005-06 football season of men's football promises to be a colorful one. Mizzou will be one of the first schools to introduce plaid products. The plaid was designed by an MU Textile and Apparel Management student {see below}.

Some of the first plaid items to be introduced include tote bags, pajama pants, men's ties, women's scarves, and stadium blankets. A small official hang tag is attached to each of the Mizzou Plaid items. Besides that, the colors speak for themselves. Tiffany Anderson of the University Bookstore says that they will promote the new design in their windows. "Plaid, excitingly enough, will be a hot fabric for fall," she says.

The classy-looking items will be a hit with both alumni and students. Employing a more subtle approach, the ties and scarves give alumni the opportunity to show their Mizzou pride at work.

Another new trend this fall will be iPod covers decorated with Mizzou logos and colors. With the explosive popularity of the iPod, retailers can expect students to take a special interest in the new covers.

Finally, last fall's fashion colors in Mizzou apparel are here to stay. Green, brown, and yellow will continue to be student favorites, and Mizzou items colored in pink are still some of the most in-demand items among female students.

"Pink is here to stay. You have your normal items in black and gold, and then also in pink, "says Laura Williamson of the Tiger Team Store.

Mizzou Plaid "Lauren Drufke-Mahe shows off her winning tartan design."

Many students strive to leave their mark on Mizzou, but few get the chance to contribute to its sense of style. For senior textile and apparel management major Lauren Drufke-Mahe, a love of fashion and an eye for design helped her create the official MU Tiger Tartan.

Tartans are plaid designs historically worn by Scottish clans as a way to form a sense of collective identity and unity. More than 6,000 people voted online and chose Drufke-Mahe's tartan design to represent Mizzou.

"I incorporated many elements that represent Mizzou,"Drufke-Mahe said. "The colors and historic landmarks were all important in creating my design. I wanted to make sure that for years to come, an individual will be able to look at the tartan and really know what it means and what it represents."

Drufke-Mahe's winning tartan design will start to appear on products in fall of 2006. "I feel honored that I can give something to Mizzou after I have received such a great education here,"Drufke-Mahe said. "I have had a great college experience, and I am sad to see it end. However, I feel I will always be a part of this University because of my contribution."

Hi! My name is Bridget Garwitz, and I am the new intern in the MU Licensing and Trademark office. I am an undergraduate studying advertising in the School of Journalism and will graduate in May of 2007.

I have worked at KMOX-AM 1120 in St. Louis where I co-authored "Here's Where: An Illustrious Guide to St. Louis" with talk-show host Charles Brennan. I have also worked as an anchor of KBIA's regional morning newscasts.

As the daughter of two Mizzou alums, I grew up going to Mizzou football and basketball games. I still spend every football Saturday tailgating with my family. I am extremely proud of the Mizzou Tiger traditions, and I am excited to be working for the University.

My main duty will be to design and write the Tiger Letter. I look forward to keeping Mizzou-RAH retailers up-todate with the latest fashions. I am excited to meet with you!
