As the school year approaches, retailers and students nationwide have yet another reason to get excited about back-to-school shopping.

August 31 is College Colors Day, a three year old tradition that hopes to promote school spirit, college apparel, and the beginning of college football season.

By increasing college awareness, this day not only marks the beginning of the academic school year but also the beginning of collegiate football. The second annual College Colors Day Classic Football Game featuring the Washington Huskies and the Syracuse Orange will be televised nationally on ESPN, promoting this new college holiday.

In addition to football,National College Colors Day is also co-presenting a Brad Paisley concert in Essex Junction, Vermont.

Retailers have the opportunity to promote the college theme during August, one of the busiest shopping months of the year. More than 2,000 collegiate retail locations from all 50 states will be promoting College Colors Day during August.

Students, alumni, and fans nationwide are encouraged to participate by wearing college apparel of their choice.

tiger town Tiger Town, located in Columbia Mall, contains a variety of gifts and Mizzou memorabilia, including hoodies and summer sandals.

Debuting last fall, Tiger Town arrived to Columbia Mall, catching the last few home games of the Tiger season.

Owner Mark Patek graduated from Mizzou in '87 with a Home Economics degree. He travels from his home in Kansas City twice a month to check in on his store loaded with tiger spirit.

"We've got everything, from hoodies to hats to stainless steel buckets and engraved mugs- all with the MU logo," store manager Cody Cook said. "During the summer we are trying to come out with some new items, like skirts and shorts, but our biggest time of year is definitely football season."

The store has two large televisions mounted so customers can catch the latest sports news while they shop. Clothing for all ages and all seasons are available year round.

A variety of hats are sold, featuring trendy mesh hats to classic hats with the vintage MU logo. Jackets varying from stonewashed denim to charcoal fleece sport both the tiger and the school's name.

"I've definitely become an even bigger MU fan since I started working here," Cook said. "I know why this school has such a following."

Tiger Town has the latest trends and the favorable classics, all with a touch of tiger spirit. The store plans on bringing in more merchandise, just in time for another Mizzou Tiger football season.

Hi! My name is Tori Reneker, and I am the new intern in the MU Licensing and Trademark office. My main duty will be to write stories and design for The Tiger Letter.

I'm originally from Dallas, Texas, and am now a junior in the strategic communications sequence in the School of Journalism, with a minor in business.

My years at Mizzou are flying by and I can easily say I have fallen in love with the school and its traditions. I hope to learn a lot during my time interning, especially since I am getting closer to graduation and a career.

I hope to learn more about retail and licensing, and look forward to keeping Mizzou-RAH retailers informed with the latest fashions. Go Tigers!
